The Pensacola Civic Band continues this annual tradition of honoring our men and women in uniform, veterans, their families, and all those who have given their lives for our country, the 8th Annual Pensacola Memorial Day Concert. This free concert will be on Monday, May 29th at Hunter Amphitheater behind Blue Wahoos Stadium and begins at 3:30 p.m. This event honoring the bravery and sacrifice of American veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Services is a season highlight for the members of the band and the Pensacola Community.
Memorial Day was first observed in May of 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of the Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic. During the first national commemoration, former Union General and sitting Ohio Congressman James A. Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery and perfectly summed up the sentiment of Memorial Day.
“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country, they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
This concert event is generously sponsored by the Pensacola Civic Band, the City of Pensacola, and TLC Caregivers and will be held at the Hunter Amphitheater at Community Maritime Park. The Memorial Day program directed by Pensacola Civic Band director, Doug Holsworth, will entertain the audience with several patriotic selections that reflect on our nation’s history and bravery of the men and women who have fought for our freedoms.
The concert is free and begins at 3:30 p.m. on Monday May 29, 2023. Attendees should bring chairs or blankets for outdoor seating. Several vendors will be onsite with food and beverages available for purchase. For more information, please visit www.pensacolaremembers.org or call Pensacola State College at 850.484.1847.
